How to decrease a number by a percentage
Convert the percentage to a decimal, subtract it from 1, and multiply the result by the original number.
New Value = Original Value × (1 − Percentage ÷ 100)
To decrease 800 by 15%: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15, then 1 − 0.15 = 0.85, then 800 × 0.85 = 680. The amount removed is 800 − 680 = 120. The same steps decrease $250 by 20%: 250 × 0.80 = $200, a reduction of $50.
Quick percentage decrease examples
| Original | Decrease | New value |
|---|---|---|
| 100 | 10% | 90 |
| 100 | 25% | 75 |
| 200 | 20% | 160 |
| 500 | 15% | 425 |
| 1,000 | 30% | 700 |
| 2,500 | 12% | 2,200 |
What does it mean to decrease a number by a percentage?
It means removing a proportion of the original value. 20% of 500 is 100, so decreasing 500 by 20% gives 500 − 100 = 400.
That is different from subtracting the percentage number itself: 500 decreased by 20% is 400, not 500 − 20 = 480.
Common uses for percentage decreases

- Business expenses
- Price markdowns
- Budget reductions
- Depreciation
- Declining revenue
- Energy consumption
- Weight reduction
- Inventory reductions
- Investment losses
- Measurement changes
Discount example
A jacket costs $180 and is discounted by 30%: 180 × (1 − 30 ÷ 100) = $126. You save 180 − 126 = $54.
Decrease a price by a percentage
Sale Price = Original Price × (1 − Discount Percentage ÷ 100)
For a $75 item discounted by 20%: 75 × 0.80 = $60, so the discount saves you $15.
Decrease by 10%, 20%, 25% and 50%
- 10% — multiply by 0.90. 450 × 0.90 = 405.
- 20% — multiply by 0.80. 350 × 0.80 = 280.
- 25% — multiply by 0.75. 1,200 × 0.75 = 900.
- 50% — cut it in half. 600 × 0.50 = 300.
Percentage decrease vs. percent change
Decrease a number by a percentage: you know the percentage and want the new value. Decrease 500 by 20% → 400.
Calculate percentage decrease: you know the old and new values and want the percentage. A price falling from 500 to 400 is (500 − 400) ÷ 500 × 100 = 20%.
If you already know both values, use the Percent Change Calculator instead.
Frequently asked questions
How do I subtract a percentage from a number?
Multiply the original number by 1 minus the percentage expressed as a decimal. For example, to subtract 15% from 200: 200 × (1 − 0.15) = 170.
What is 100 decreased by 20%?
20% of 100 is 20, so 100 − 20 = 80.
What is 500 decreased by 10%?
500 × 0.90 = 450.
What is 1,000 decreased by 25%?
1,000 × 0.75 = 750.
How do I reduce a price by a percentage?
Multiply the original price by 1 − discount percentage ÷ 100. For example, reducing $80 by 25% gives 80 × 0.75 = $60.
Is decreasing by 20% the same as multiplying by 80%?
Yes. If a number is decreased by 20%, then 80% of the original value remains, so X × (1 − 20 ÷ 100) is the same as X × 0.80.
