What does “percent of” mean?

Percent means “per hundred”, so 20% is 20 ÷ 100 = 0.20. In percentage calculations the word of means multiply, so “20% of 500” is 0.20 × 500 = 100.

Can a percentage be more than 100%?

Yes. A percentage above 100% simply means more than the whole. 125% of 80 is 1.25 × 80 = 100. The calculator does not restrict the percentage to 100.

Can I use decimal percentages?

Yes. For 7.5% of 1,200: 7.5 ÷ 100 = 0.075, then 1,200 × 0.075 = 90. Decimal amounts such as 123.45 work the same way.

Can I calculate less than 1%?

Yes. For 0.5% of 2,000: 0.5 ÷ 100 = 0.005, then 2,000 × 0.005 = 10. Small fractional rates such as 0.25% or 0.05% are handled accurately.
